Healthy gums are, of course, a part of your oral health, but did you know that they also impact nearly every other system in your body – including your heart!
If you have been tuned into the news lately, you have probably caught a few facts about the connection between your oral health and your overall health. Research continuously identifies more links between periodontal (gum) disease and other systemic conditions.
Some conditions linked to periodontal disease include:
Not only can periodontal disease lead to tooth loss, but it also dramatically impacts your overall health. This is why we place such an emphasis on helping our patients eliminate gum disease.
Symptoms of gum disease start with mild irritation and progress over time to include some of the following signs:
Each patient who comes to our Greeley, CO dental office will receive a periodontal evaluation to help us determine the type of dental cleaning that will work best for you. We start by looking for signs of inflammation and measuring any pocketing between your teeth and gums.
Healthy gums fit your teeth snugly and hug tightly against the base of your teeth. As gum infections develop, your gums may begin to pull away from your tooth, creating a harbor for bacteria and infection.
When we catch gum disease in the early stages, called gingivitis, we can often address your condition with a thorough dental cleaning and improved home care. Our hygienists will remove tartar, provide proper oral hygiene instruction, and follow up with you to make sure your gums heal properly.
As gum disease progresses into periodontitis, we may need to use a series of specialized dental cleanings to remove bacteria and diseased tissue. Often this will occur over the course of several appointments and require ongoing care three to four times per year. With your commitment to good home care, you can actually experience dramatic improvement. The gums and bone are the foundations for the teeth, and keeping them healthy will significantly increase your quality of life.
We offer an innovative treatment called perioscopy that utilizes a tiny fiber optic camera to identify calculus (tartar) beneath your gumline. This allows us to address your condition without the need for surgical procedures. It also allows us to remove all of the tartar present for better long-term results.
Once you have had gum disease, you will always be more prone to a reoccurrence. Our team will remain vigilant and recommend an appropriate dental cleaning schedule to keep the infection at bay.
