What type of education or training is required to be a dental assistant?

Return to FAQs

In Colorado, no formal training is required to be a dental assistant. You can be on the job trained. There is certification available for dental assistants who have been in the field for two years or who have graduated from an ADA accredited dental assisting program and who have passed the Dental Assisting National Board test. Once you have your certification it is required that you complete at least 12 hours of continuing education every year and stay current on your CPR certification. All assistants who take x-rays are required to be x-ray certified. This involves a class as well as 4 hours of supervised hands on training. Our office is consistently involved in continuing education so we can stay current on the latest technologies, materials, equipment, and techniques and so that we can provide the highest quality of care for our patients.
